+ Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is rooted in my goal to effectively teach each of my students and instill in them a love for learning by providing a purposeful learning environment. It is my goal to promote creative and critical thinking by implementing innovative approaches that enhance student achievement. As learning is a social phenomenon, I aim to teach through collaborative group tasks related to the local and global community. I want my students to understand that learning does not always occur in the confines of a classroom. During my last teaching practicum I designed a literacy unit that focussed on the development of voice and perspective as a writing trait. This was taught through a social justice lens as students explored social and economic issues in Rwanda by actively participating in a variety of drama-integrated activities. My focus is to develop a unique learning environment that nurtures justice, stewardship and fidelity so that students may become active, conscientious citizens.
My previous teaching experiences, particularly my experiences at Jackson Special School in Australia, have allowed me to develop an extensive understanding of differentiated instruction techniques and emphasized my adaptability and resourcefulness. I recognize the importance of engaging multiple learning styles and aptitudes through differentiation. My knowledge of technology will present opportunities for me to implement a variety of interactive activities and provide a meaningful learning experience that will benefit each student. I have extensive experience with students in the intermediate division through individual tutoring and classroom teaching, resulting in effective classroom management skills.
